We continue to discuss energy withOnondaga Nation attorney Joseph Heath.  According to today’s NYTIMES, “The glut (in natural gas) puts the United States at the center of the increasingly globalized natural gas market.”  Recently EXXON was  issued an export license for natural gas; and a Qatar government-owned company received a permit to ship US gas to Japan and elsewhere overseas.     What does this mean for the debate over hydrofracking here in New York?

FORT WORTH, Texas–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sep. 26, 2012– RANGE RESOURCES CORPORATION (NYSE: RRC) today announced that one of its subsidiaries has signed a 15-year agreement with Sunoco Logistics Partners, L.P. (NYSE: SXL) to become the anchor shipper on the Mariner East Project subject to final approval by FERC. The Mariner East Project is a pipeline, processing and export project that will interconnect the natural gas liquids resources in southwest Pennsylvania to Sunoco’s existing infrastructure and international port at its Marcus Hook facility near Philadelphia.

With far lower production figures than the gas industry hyped you can be assured that any landowner/leaseholders will receive far less than the hyped figures they were originally promised. But environmental and health and safety risks for landowners and neighbors will not be reduced. It is always important to keep in mind that these lower production figures and lower currant gas prices are not going to protect Plymouth, Chenango County and New York State from serious ultimate environmental and even long term economic damage, only moratoriums and bans will do that job. Even better protection will be a statewide ban. The gas industry has been proving time and time again that their development is a public menace and should be stopped. When are political leaders, most especially Republicans, in the town, county, Southern Tier and state going to clue in?
