- LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Hunters in rural Clearfield and Centre counties have told WJAC-TV that their favorite hunting spots have been replaced with natural gas drilling rigs. Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Gas and Oil Forester Jason Cotton said recent drilling operations in and around the Moshannon State Forest have not scared away wildlife.“Many times, I’ve seen white-tailed deer on the pad locations or driving in when driving in along the roads to the pad,” said Cotton.Game Commission and DCNR officials have taken complaints from a number of hunters stunned after discovering their tree stand location has been cleared out.”’I always put my tree stand at this spot,’” said DCNR Asst. District Manager Wayne Wynick. “Well, they may not be able to, because that spot doesn’t exist anymore. Now they’re all upset.” According to Pennsylvania Game Commission Law Enforcement Supervisor Rick Macklem, agreements have already been made to limit drilling operations on the first three days and every Saturday of the season at sites where the state owns the land and the mineral rights, but officials have no control of operations where they don’t own the mineral rights. Because new hunting rules haven’t been enacted since the Marcellus Shale drilling boom, game commission officials urge hunters to maintain a 150-yard safety radius around drilling sites and to never shoot in the direction of a rig.”There will be a row of posters around the site that you should not cross,” said Wynick.
