Gas Pipelines: What Municipalities Need to Know
May 17, 2012. Ithaca, NY. Free Twenty interstate natural gas pipeline systems crisscross the region from West Virginia to Maine. As gas drilling operations expand, thousands of miles of new pipelines will be needed to connect existing pipelines to gas wells. Learn the difference between gathering, transmission, and distribution lines; what agencies have jurisdiction over the various types of lines; how pipelines are permitted, regulated, and monitored; and how municipalities can prepare for an increase in pipeline networks.

Presenters: Sharon Anderson, Environmental Program Leader, Cornell Cooperative Extension Tompkins County; Jim Austin, Environmental Certification and Compliance, State of New York Department of Public Service; Deborah Goldberg, Managing Attorney, Earthjustice Northeast Regional Office; Meghan Thoreau, Planner, Southern Tier Central Regional Planning and Development Board.

Co-sponsored by Cornell Cooperative Extension Tompkins County and Tompkins County Council of Governments.

You know the David and Goliath story – In the version you will hear on today’s show,  David is a 54 year old Canadian scientist by the name of Jessica Ernst .   An unlikely hero in that she worked with and for the petroleum industry for 30 years.  In this story, her Goliath is one of the largest natural gas producers in the world, EnCana.  With Ernst’s diligence, the Canadian Energy Resources Conservation Board has started to pursue EnCana for negligence and unlawful activities.  While the issue is still in court, and none of Ernst’s claims have been proven, she was asked to testify at the UN on the same issue.

Seneca Lake Methane Storage Project 31097521420002

Inergy has applied for permits for stratigraphic test wells. What they’re doing is opening and preparing depleted salt caverns for Natural Gas Liquid storage (aka fracked gas and fracked gas derivatives like Liquefied Petroleum).  Their plan is to be ready to store the glut of gas being produced from fracking as soon as the DEC accepts the EIS as final.  This decision could come down any day now and we could become the fracked gas storage and transport capital of the USA.
