Sustainable Cortland Community Meeting 
Tuesday, September 10, 7-8pm, NYS Grange 
Learn more about what SC does in the community and get involved. AmeriCorps funding was not renewed and so we hope volunteers will step up so we can keep doing amazing work in the area.

How to Ferment Foods
Wednesday, September 11, 6-8pm, NYS Grange
Learn how to make your own cultured (lacto-fermented) foods with Chris Applegate of the Virgil Farmer’s Market. Participants will go home with recipes and their own jar of cultured food. Register here.

Common Ground Community Garden Ribbon Cutting

Common Ground is celebrating its first season, thanks to the combined efforts of community groups working with local government. Sustainable Cortland took the lead role of helping to coordinate the garden this season and we are proud to say it was a success. Learn more here.

CNY Energy Challenge Seeks Team Leaders
This fall Leaders will gather in groups of 5-8 households to learn about how they can make energy reducing changes to their homes. Teams meet once a week for 6 weeks in Oct/Nov. Learn more about it here or e-mail. There will be a training for group facilitators the week of September 30th.

Locavore Challenge
In celebration of National Organic Harvest Month, NOFA is again launching a month-long Locavore Challenge in September to inspire awareness and action in eating locally and organically through events and activities held around the state and online.

City of Cortland is Drafting a Climate Action Plan
The process has begun. To see their Greenhouse Gas Inventory, click here. A public meeting will be held in the fall.

College Commits to Renewable Electricity
This fall, SUNY Cortland will become the first institution in the 64-campus SUNY system to operate all of its facilities using 100% renewable electrical energy. More than 700 new solar panels will be installed on campus as part of the commitment, and the College will purchase 16 million kilowatts of renewable energy credits a year. More here.

Dragon Hall Opens with Smaller Carbon Pawprint
SUNY Cortland’s 16th residence hall aspires to be less of a “red” dragon than a “green” one. The building will be officially unveiled to the community during a ribbon cutting onSeptember 25 at 3pm. Green features include an extensive array of rooftop solar panels, environmentally sensitive lighting and a heat-conserving insulation.
